Ep. 87: Stress-Free Shots: Make Vaccines Easy for Your Child

Reduce fear and stress, while helping your child build confidence for handling other challenges with these 4 easy steps to make your child's next vaccine a breeze! Stefan Friedrichsdorf, MD from the UCSF Stad Center shares his expert tips to calm nerves and turn the experience into a positive one.

  1. Use Numbing Cream: Buy Aspercreme 4% or any generic works fine
  2. Distract with fun toys
  3. Don’t hold the child down
  4. Give Sugar Water or Breastfeed: make your own sucrose solution by mixing one packet of sugar with two teaspoons of water. You can also buy a tube of 24% sucrose without a prescription.

When to give: Give the solution one or two minutes before the procedure. For multiple immunizations, give the solution throughout the procedure.

How to give: You can squirt one to two drops onto the front of your baby's tongue, or place one drop at a time onto the front of their tongue with a syringe or dropper. You can also squeeze or place one or two drops of the solution onto a pacifier and let your baby suck on it.

Who it's for: Sweet-Ease is most often given to infants 6 months and younger.
